What is a clinical trial?
The purpose of a clinical trial is to discover a way to detect, control, or cure a disease or disorder.  Some trials test the effects of treatments on disease, some aim to prevent disease; others study the effects of the disease itself.
This investigation for improved treatment begins with basic research which points out methods likely to present positive outcomes and, as much as possible, shows how to use them safely and effectively.  This early research cannot predict exactly how a new treatment will work on the human population.  Thus the clinical trail is done, in which investigators try to duplicate in people the promising results from basic research.
Clinical trails are predominantly designed to test the effects of a new or existing treatment on a disorder or illness.  Clinical trials must take place before new research treatments can be made available to the public for prescription or over-the-counter use.  Many medical treatments currently available have been analyzed through clinical trials.  All clinical trials are carefully monitored under strict government regulations.
Why are clinical trials important?
Clinical trials are significant in ensuring that individuals receive safe and effective treatments for their health conditions. These trials provide the means to develop new treatments that are as effective, more effective or safer than treatments already on the market.  They also permit researchers to discover new therapeutic uses for currently available mediations as well offering potential of developing innovative treatments for conditions that currently have no treatment.
What are the benefits of participating in a clinical trial?
Individuals participate in clinical trials for a variety of reasons, including health, financial, and personal needs.  Volunteers whom participate in clinical trials aid in advancing medical science, which will benefit many others in the future?  While there is no guarantees that participants will benefit from the research treatment they receive, many find that the study medication relieves their condition more effectively and/or with less side effects than their previous treatment plan.  Pharmaceutical companies sponsor clinical trials that often offer free study medication and study-related care.  In addition, most clinical trials also offer financial compensation for time and travel expenses.
How does a person become involved in a clinical trial?
Once an individual has an interest in participating in a dermatological clinical trial they will receive a brief interview by one of North Florida Dermatology Associates, P.A. experience research staff to determine if he or she would likely be a good candidate for a study.  A screening visit may then be scheduled for a potential candidate to discuss the trial in more depth and to further screen the candidate for qualification, possibly resulting in study enrollment.
